The biggest, smelliest tourist trap in the world was once a proud city, one of the commercial capitals of the world. That was hundreds of years ago. Now almost nobody lives there, and the place is mobbed by tourists. Because the entire economy consists of tourists who leech off of Venice's history, everything is overpriced. You're ten times as likely to meet forty British people following a guide with an open umbrella than a Venetian in Venice

(Sí, Venecia tiene un mal olor pero nadie puede quitarte el gusto de tomarte bebidas de 12E [precio de hace como 5 años] en la plaza San Marcos, no hay ningun tipo trepado en la góndola cantándote ópera ni están vestidos con camisetas de rayas, de hecho a veces la gente se pone de acuerdo con otra para compartir el precio de un mini viajecito en gondolita. Hay que admitir que aunque se vea laberítica no te pierdes sigues a cualquiera... porque todos son turístas. En general el metro de Italia apesta, si alguna vez se preguntaron si las europeas no se rasuran la axila... encontré la respuesta en Italia, en Roma, si mi memoria no me falla)

I think Stonehenge was the biggest disappointment. This dinky little bunch of stones surrounded by a fence. Movies and pictures make it seem so huge. This was my first, and not my last, trip to Europe. Stonehenge was the only thing that I found a let down.

To that please add South Beach in Miami. It's become a caricature of itself with too many pastel-colored, overpriced hotels and nightclubs straining to attract Beautiful People in a pseudo-sophisticated scene that is, in fact, smarmy and aloof.

athens in general-just an unpleasant, overrated mess with people who seem determined to rip you off. having said that-the rest of Greece is great.
